On July 31, 2020, Prime Minister Trudeau stated that the government’s goal is to transition everyone currently receiving the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (“CERB”) to Employment Insurance (“EI”). The federal government will create a transitional, parallel benefit for workers that do not qualify for EI, such as independent contractors and gig workers.
Currently, the last scheduled CERB pay period is set to end on September 26, 2020.
The Prime Minister confirmed that more details about the future of the CERB will be announced in the coming weeks.
